The Importance of Hiring A Professional Electrician

When I bought my first house, I figured that I could do most of the repairs. After successfully installing a backsplash and replacing some of the carpet, I started focusing on things like electrical work. Unfortunately, the reference guide I was using was outdated, and I was shocked by a new type of cable. That day, I decided that some tasks simply aren't cut out for novice homeowners. I shifted my focus to hiring professional subcontractors, and it made a world of difference. This blog talks about the dangers of doing your own electrical work, and why you should always use a professional.

3 Electrical Issues In Your Home You Shouldn't Ignore

Electrical issues can happen in your home for a number of reasons. Rodents can chew through wires in your attic or basement, causing whole outlets to not work. Too much wattage can be sent to high-powered appliances, such as your stove or dryer, causing your circuit breakers to trip. You may even notice strange noises coming from your circuit breaker's fuse box which can be an indicator of malfunctioning fuses. Here are 3 electrical issues in your home you should never ignore.

Non-working or hot outlets

A non-working outlet means that a connection has been lost somewhere in your electrical wiring. This can be caused by fittings becoming loose (a common issue in older homes with original wiring), or rodents chewing through wires. A hot outlet is another issue you don't want to ignore. A hot outlet is an outlet that is noticeably hot to the touch, or an outlet where the wall surrounding the area gets warm or hot when items or plugged in. A hot outlet can melt or burn cords that are plugged into them, and can be a sign that you are getting too much wattage.

Strange noises in your fuse box

When your circuit breaker trips due to too much electricity running through your home at one time, you will want to check your fuse box to see which fuses have been triggered. If you notice any humming or even see sparks coming from your box when you are switching fuses back on, then this can be a sign that fuses are wearing out. An electrician can replace faulty fuses before they begin to melt wires and cause other fuses to malfunction.

Flickering lights or loud appliances

Your eyes and ears are not playing tricks on you if you think your lights are flickering when turned on or your fridge is suddenly making strange, loud humming sounds. These are signs that power is being surged then pulled away from your appliances and lights, which can indicate that electrical currents are not flowing smoothly through your home. Since the underlying issue can be as simple as a blown or failing fuse in your circuit box or as complex as faulty wiring somewhere in your home, it's best to have an electrician, like those at Direct Current, diagnose your wiring issues so they can repair them for you.

Your home can experience electrical issues at any time. Even new houses can be susceptible to wiring issues or other problems with their circuit boxes. If you have an electrical emergency, call a 24 hour electrical service to come to your home right away.
